Like central air conditioners, split aircon units are literally split into 2 parts. One part goes inside the building and the other outside, via the use of a connecting pipe. The makes the split units not only easier but less expensive to install than full central air conditioners as it has a ductless design. The unit that sits inside is often called the "air handler". The unit that goes outside is the guts of the air conditioning unit and is called the "compressor".
Choosing a split ductless air conditioner
Just as with other types of aircon units, you will need to calculate the cooling power or BTU needed, so that you know buy the correct air conditioning unit to cool your room effectively. Think also about additional features like remote control and whether you want a combination cooler and heater for climate control?
Several different types of venting systems apply to split air conditioning units, and it's an important decision on which one you buy as this will effect the installation. Some are fixed to the walls or ceiling of your home or office, whereas some easy DIY split air conditioners can be fitted without the need of an installer.
Why buy a split air conditioning unit?
When compared to a full blown central air conditioning solution, split air conditioners are a cost effective choice for your air conditioning needs. They can be more expensive than portable air conditioning units and you may need a HVAC professional installer, depending on the type you buy. The major benefit of split air conditioners is that due to the compressor being situated outside the building, they are generally very efficient and extremely quiet.
Installation
Installing a split air conditioner can be more complicated than a portable air con unit, but is considerably less hassle than installing a central aircon system. You may need a professional HVAC installer to manage drainage, electricity and coolant.
Holes and Tubing
You may need a hole bored in your wall to connect the inside "Air Handler" and the outside "Compressor". Sizes do vary, but are typically 3 inches in diameter, and you will need to ensure you have enough tubing to connect the 2 units, which obviously depends on how far apart you are going to install them.
Heating and Cooling
As with some portables, there are split air conditioning models that also incorporate a heating function. Whilst a little more expensive, this extra investment will pay dividends in the cold of winter when your air conditioning unit becomes a climate control centre.
Dual and Quad Aircon Systems Explained
The inside part of split air conditioners are the "Air Handlers" and they connect to the compressor situated outside. However it's possible to have two or even three Air Handlers connected to the same Compressor, this is called Dual Zone and Quad Zone, respectively. This can be a useful idea if you want to cool more than one room, or a particularly large room or more open plan space, and you want more even cooling.
